What Is Cold Calling?
Cold calling is the art of calling potential customers over the phone without any prior relationship. An example of this is “My name is ___ and I’m with ____ I am calling you today to explain my product/service and how it can benefit your life. Do you a few minutes to allow me to explain how we can benefit you.” This is spam. This is annoying. This is how you lose sales. Now cold calling does have its benefits, which I will get to later, however this is what most people think of when it comes to cold calling.
The Debate About Cold Calling
Cold calling has been at the center of debate for being effective in sales and marketing since the dawn of time. There are many different sides to the story. On one side, there are people who say that cold calling can improve communication skills and create a personal relationship with someone over the phone. Sometimes it is nice to talk to someone who wants to help your business grow. On the other hand, some people say that cold calling is bad because it can be time consuming and has a low success rate. The reason behind this is that people are very hesitant to answer unknown numbers because of the rise of spam calls that people may receive.
Now, there is a cold calling method that can be beneficial if you can get someone on the phone first. This method is often called “warm calling”. This method includes callers, often sales reps, first building some rapport with a potential prospect before looking to make a sale. Your goal should be to learn what problems the prospect is having, so that you can solve it. This is not a time to be a salesperson, but to be a good listener. After listening to their problem, look for a way to keep in touch with them, if they are not ready to buy from you yet. Your goal at this point is to nurture them for the long run and build a long-term relationship with them. This will eventually lead to a lifetime value customer if you are able to satisfy their needs.
Pros of Cold Calling
- Real-Time Feedback: During a cold call, sales representatives can gauge the prospect’s level of interest, objections, and concerns in real-time. This feedback can be valuable for understanding customer pain points and tailoring future pitches.
- Quick Response: Unlike some other marketing methods, cold calling can often yield immediate responses. If a prospect is interested, the sales representative can move the process forward, potentially leading to quicker conversions.
- Targeted Approach: With the right data and research, businesses can target specific demographics or industries when making cold calls, increasing the likelihood of reaching potential customers who are genuinely interested in the product or service.
- Cost-Effective: Compared to some other marketing methods, cold calling can be a cost-effective way to reach potential customers, especially for smaller businesses with limited budgets.
Like we said earlier, cold calling is not all bad. These are several ways that it can you’re your business grow if you are on a smaller budget.
Cons of Cold Calling
- Low Success Rates: Cold calling often has low success rates, with many calls resulting in rejections or unanswered calls. This can lead to frustration for sales representatives.
- Negative Perception: Many people view cold calls as intrusive and annoying, leading to a negative perception of the company or brand making the calls. This can harm the company’s reputation and even lead to people avoiding doing business with them.
- Time-Consuming: Cold calling can be a time-consuming process, as it involves making numerous calls to reach potential customers, and many of those calls may not yield positive results.
- Interruption of Daily Life: Cold calls can interrupt people during their busy schedules, which can lead to irritation and a negative reception of the call.
- Rejection Impact on Morale: Frequent rejection during cold calling can demotivate sales representatives, leading to decreased morale and potentially affecting their overall performance.
What should cold calling look like in digital media?
Cold calling is in every industry of business, but what would it look like in the digital media industry. From our experience, cold calling is not fun and can be very tricky within the digital media field. Disclaimer: We are not here to tell you if you should cold call or not, that is for you to decide, however we do want to give you some insight on what we have experienced in each niche. Here is our experience:
For our photographers, we used a method called cold approaching. We went around and explained to people that we are photographers and we want to build up our photography skills and portfolio. We would then offer them a free photo shoot. A lot of people would just flat out say no and that was the end of that. Some people would question our history or our intention, in which we had to break the ice a little to do the photo shoot. Finally, there were a small percentage of people who agreed to the photo shoot, no questions asked. Everyone who agreed to do the photoshoot was very happy with the photos that we took. We would send them their photos and ask them for any feedback on how we could improve our work. They ghosted us. My point is that cold approaching sucks as a photographer.
For our videographers and music producers, this was practically an impossible task. We looked and looked everywhere but we could not find anyone who wanted to work with an unknown videographer or music producer. This was something that we felt that you couldn’t cold call nor cold approach. After a few days, we admitted defeat and moved on. We felt that we had a better chance of winning the lottery than finding a client who would want to work with us.
Final Thoughts
Overall, we believe that cold calling is what you make it out to be. If you enjoy it or are having success from it, then be our guest and continue to do it. If you hate it, then there are many other marketing methods to use such as social media, SEO, or even referrals (we recommend that you read our article on how referrals can grow your business). The bottom line is that whatever marketing method you choose to use, do it and make sure to master it.
